Acupuncture is an alternative medical approach to treating pain and injury. It is one of the oldest forms of medicine and is still widely accepted as a leading treatment in the relief of pain and injury.
Essentially Acupuncture works by promoting blood flow and stimulating the body's natural responses to injury. In this way, Acupuncture can speed up the recovery process following injury. Acupuncture can also blocks pain signals by stimulating the neural system. This is called 'Pain Gate Theory' and works in much the same way as the relief you get when rubbing a bump on your head.
Despite having its roots in Eastern medicine, there are many comparisons to be made when comparing ancient Acupuncture theories to current medical understanding. The Chinese talk about 'enhancing' the flow of Chi or energy in relation to acupuncture. This could be compared to the flow of Blood. Chinese practitioners also tend to choose Acupuncture points based on lines called 'Meridians'. These are said to have a relationship with the underlying structure that is at fault. Again, these 'Meridians' are not that dissimilar to the lines seen when nerves roots are trapped or injured. Put another way, the nervous system in our bodies would create a similar picture to that of a Chinese Meridian chart if you could see all the areas that a nerve supplied sensation and movement to.
So, if your wanting to know 'Does Acupuncture Work?' the answer is yes, it does. It can be very effective in the treatment of back pain, neck pain, trigger points, aching joints and arthritis. Although this its effects can vary from person to person.
However, don't expect to be treated in a traditional Chinese way. Consult Physio is not guided by Meridians and Chi, but by a detailed understanding of our anatomy. We use localised Acupuncture points around or even directly onto an injury site to stimulate a fast effective response. We use a number of different techniques including 'Dry Needling' and 'Intramuscular Stimulation', and will typically apply acupuncture in conjunction with other treatment techniques.
